Interviews: Slaves
We have interviewed two slaves on how their lives are and what jobs they have. The first slave states that he works in the mines. Here is his description about his experience: “It is a very cruel and tough thing to do, working in the mines. We get very little food and no respect at all. If we get injured, we are either killed or we have to shrug it off. I have seen many workers die in these mines, and the scene is not pleasant. There are guts and blood everywhere. If someone finds a dead body, we just trash it, not giving that person a proper funeral or nothing. The only thing I have left to say is, is that I’m just lucky to be alive after what’s happened at the mines.”
The second slave that we interviewed says that he works in his owners house. Here is what he has to say about his experience: “I am very fortunate for the house that I work at. I say this because my owner pays me, but very little, which is still better than other people, because I heard that most people don’t get paid at all. My owner and I have a good, trusting relationship. I believe we have a trusting relationship because he depends on me to watch and take care of the kids, as well as tending the house while he is gone. My owner also gives me good amounts of food and water. He only gives me a punishment if I have done something terrible wrong, which hasn't happened yet, but if I do, do something minor, he usually gives me a stern lecture. All I can say now, is that I am very lucky to have this type of job.” Source: History Of Our World, pg. 258 |
